Farmer D Goes To California

Middle Green Valley - Solano County, California

Farmer D spent this past week in the 'Green' of California: speaking at the Green Valley Agricultural Conservancy in Fairfield, spending time at The Rudolph Steiner College in Fair Oaks and being inspired by Village Homes, a (if not the) model of sustainable communities in Davis, California.

The Green Valley Agricultural Conservancy is an independent, non-profit organization whose mission is preserve the working landscapes that have characterized Solano County (specifically Middle Green Valley) for over 150 years. They are promoting sustainable food and agriculture systems by creating  a synergy amongst agricultural lands, environments- natural and man-made, healthy living ideals and resource stewardship. The Conservancy will help manage and monitor the ±1,500 acres of productive agricultural land, pastures, and natural areas.

Hart Howerton is developing a Specific Plan for Middle Green Valley to conserve the agricultural legacy of this land and develop a sustainable community around the Stewardship Ethics outlined by the Conservancy. Farmer D was asked to come on board as an advisor in the planning and developing  of this conservation community. So a few Sundays ago he met with the whole community to discuss his work with the Green Valley Agricultural Conservancy and to empower them to grow healthy foods, renew the connection to agriculture and envision a sustainable community.

Wow--look at those pomegranates! I just ordered two pomegranate trees from the ALFI sale? Any suggestions for how to care for them? Do I prune them as shrubs? They'll be in my tiny backyard!
